95 Grade 9s For Triumphant Tollbar Academy GCSE Students

Some of the 40 highest-achievers at Tollbar Academy today, who each received at least one grade 9 GCSE - the equivalent of an A** grade.


Forty students achieved top Grade 9s today as Tollbar Academy celebrated another fantastic year of GCSE results. These students achieved 95 grade 9s between them - the equivalent of an A** grade.

These grades were achieved in a wide range of academic subjects, including English Literature, which achieved 12 grade 9s; Physics 14 grade 9s; Chemistry 15 grade 9s; Biology 10 grade 9s; and Combined Science 13 grade 9s.

89% of the 329 students, by far the largest Year 11 cohort in any school in the region, achieved a standard pass (grades 4-9) in English and 71% achieved a strong pass (grades 5-9). 100% of students achieved a standard pass (grades 4-9) in Triple Science, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and 90% of those students achieved a strong pass (grades 5-9). In Maths, 73.6% of students achieved a standard pass and 54.5% achieved a strong pass.

Across all Sciences, 73.6% achieved a standard pass in two Science subjects; in History, 86% of students achieved a standard pass and 74% a strong pass. In Music, 95% achieved a standard pass and 90% a strong pass; in Art 91% of students achieved a standard pass.

Caroline Yates, Tollbar Academy Principal, said today: "This year's results are testament to all the hard work of the students, their parents and our staff. I am extremely pleased that their hard work has been reflected in their fantastic achievements today, especially given the increased rigour of examinations. I would like to congratulate all students and wish them every success for their future."

Two of Tollbar Academy's highest-achievers - Tom Melling (left) and Josiah Gabbitas - celebrate their fantastic GCSE results. Tom Melling achieved six grade 9s. "I cannot believe it," he said. "It's brilliant." Josiah Gabbitas achieved four grade 9s. He said: "I did better than I thought I would. I am so pleased now."


Rhys Broughton achieved four grade 9 GCSEs in Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics and will now study A Levels at Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College. "I want to study medicine so I hope to go to university. This is a great start," he said.


Mary Jennings achieved a grade 9 in English Literature. "I am so happy. The GCSE courses were stressful at times but we had a lot of support to overcome that."


Ellie Nisbett achieved a grade 9 in History, and was particularly delighted with her fantastic grade 7s ( the old A grade) in English Literature and Language. "I didn't think I was going to pass so I am over the moon."

Conor Armstrong achieved a grade 9 in Science and Music and will now go to college to study Science, Business and Graphics. He said: "I am really pleased with my achievements. I didn't expect it." Conor's dad John and mum Eleanor said: "We are very, very proud of him."
